Gary Callahan, Managing Editor As 1099 Magazine's resident whip-cracker (well, he's pretty kind, actually) and project manager, Gary Callahan is in charge of our people and processes. Magazines are complicated projects, and a managing editor's job is to make sure all the pieces fit together. On any given day you might find him talking with freelance writers, editing and proofreading copy, writing contracts, scheduling printers, massaging budgets, arranging photo shoots, and in general juggling lots of balls in the air. Gary arrived at Aquent (the magazine's parent company) in August 2000 to help the webzine staff launch the printed version of 1099 Magazine. No stranger to the world of independent professionals, Gary had been working as an IP publication consultant since leaving his position as the Managing Editor for the Harvard Business Review. He's also worked as a freelance photographer and reporter, so he knows well the many challenges faced by IPs. Prior to six years as the Review's M.E., Gary was the Production Director for Metrocorp's Boston Magazine, where he oversaw all of Boston's advertising, editorial, and design processes. Gary was also involved in the launch of a number of Metrocorp's special publications, including The New England Travel Guide, Sail Boston 1992, and Bird: A Basketball Legend. |
